Hair Extension Maintenance Best Practices

Beauty/ Hair

It’s important to know exactly how to take care of your hair extensions. After all, aftercare plays an important role in ensuring that your extensions last long. Unfortunately, with the many conflicting and confusing information out there, it can be difficult to know exactly what to do.

But fret not. Here is a rundown of models’ and hair stylists’ best kept secrets.

Separate Extension Bonds Every Day

This, no doubt, is the most important part of the extension aftercare regimen. So take some time each morning to separate every bond with the fingers. Fear not—the task may sound like one that requires so much of your time, but it just takes a few precious minutes of your morning.

By taking a few minutes of your time every morning in doing this task, you prevent the tangling of bonds at the root level. When there is no tangling, pieces can easily be removed once they are no longer suitable for use.

Wash Extensions Properly

The steps involved in the washing of extensions is not the same as the steps involved in washing natural strands. Except for a few exceptions, bonds should, in general, be washed using the recommended (hair-friendly) cleaning products only. Conditioner and shampoo, when applied to locks and the extensions among them, may cause the bonding of extensions and strands to slip or loosen.

Also, make sure to wash strands in warm water only. Hot water can greatly affect the bonding of both natural strands and extensions. And when washing, never flip hair to the front. Flipping over hair may cause tangling.

Gently Brush the Extensions

This step is very important since extensions are just accessories for your hair and scalp, not a part of your body. If you normally use heavy strokes when brushing hair, use slow and light strokes when you have extensions on. Slow, light strokes effectively remove tangles without pulling on the extensions. And when brushing extensions, an extension brush needs to be used in order to ensure that no bonds are caught in the process.

Avoid Sleeping With Extensions Wet

Sleeping with wet and semi-dry hair and extensions causes severe matting and tangling. As such, it is very important to make time to dry strands and extension pieces fully before you hit the bed.

Secure Extensions Before Sleeping

Doing this eliminates the need to detangle strands in the morning, which puts so much pressure on extension bonds. Hence, by doing this, styling your locks and the extension pieces among them in the morning becomes easier.

Attend Extension Maintenance Appointments

Always stay updated with maintenance appointments. Stylists will usually schedule these maintenance appointments every four to six weeks to ensure that your actual hair and the extension pieces installed among them stay healthy and look great, respectively.

Apply Deep Conditioning Treatment on Extensions Each Week

Aside from the shampoo and conditioner recommended for you, it’s also important to apply deep conditioner with natural oil to your locks and all extension pieces among them each week. Extensions, even those obtained from dealers like Human Hair Extension Online, do not get natural oil from the scalp, and this means you need to supply the moisture yourself.

Notes on Wearing Extensions on Holiday

If you are going on a trip with extension pieces on, mind the water the pieces will be exposed to. Swimming pool chlorine can make pieces brittle, and seawater can cause discolouration.

Conclusion:

As long as you look after them properly by following the steps above, you can benefit from the extensions you purchased. But if you want to gain even more benefits from these accessories, you can approach a stylist who can recommend to you even more steps and products to ensure your pieces stay strong.

Hair extensions are a great way to add volume and length to your hair overnight. There are some cases of damage caused by extensions; however at the same time there are definitely practices too just like these to reduce the risk of hair damage.

I had no idea that hair extensions required so much aftercare! I’ve had short hair for a while now and my hair grows sooo slowly so have been looking into extensions actually.

This is a great post on how to look after extensions and I found it really helpful as I have never had extensions due to the worry of the upkeep. My hair is so thin due to age and too much bleach, so I think I would like to try having extensions to give me more options with my hair and styling it xx

My mummy has really long, thick hair and struggles to keep that looking healthy! Great advice for extension wearers. They sound like they need more care than natural hair.

Great tips! I’ve actually been considering getting extensions for a while, as my hair got really damaged earlier in the year when I had acrylic wool braids. I shall bookmark this page to come back to! Thank you so much for sharing! <3 xx

Apart from my weave I don’t actually wear hair extensions that need this much maintenance lol. I am so lazy at hair maintenance maybe I should be doing this already but currently not.

I think extensions can look incredible when they are put in properly, and looked after properly. This will be so helpful to people considering having them done… I might be tempted one day…

I have to admit I’ve never had extensions this sounds like some really good advice for those who are looking to get them through to make sure they are kept in best shape.

My sister used to wear extensions and now she does it professionally. It always looked like too much hassle with the aftercare though! I don’t think people realise what goes into keep them in good condition. If anything, they need more care than your natural hair!
