What’s the most exciting step in your morning routine? Maybe it’s washing your face or taking a hot shower to wake yourself up. Don’t laugh – but for me it’s putting on my deodorant. It’s true! It’s the last activity I do before putting on my posh outfit and heading out the door. It’s a moment of completion for my skin, therefore it’s my favorite step. I realize that not everyone has deodorant at the top of their list of exciting things to do, but we all know it is somewhat expected and necessary.
As humans we naturally sweat. It’s the way our body cools itself so we prevent from over heating. It’s pretty incredible to think about how our body protects us, but what isn’t so amazing is the smell that sweat exudes. Smell is the reason of many to use deodorant, but through research and today’s partnership with Dove and Simply Stylist I was able to find smell isn’t the only factor we should be examining when it comes to purchasing an antiperspirant. Thankfully I was able to interview Dove’s Dermatologist, Dr. Alicia Barba, to answer some of my most personal questions about antiperspirants. Please read her answers below!
What should women look for in an antiperspirant?
A good antiperspirant is an essential part to every woman’s beauty routine. Look for an antiperspirant that goes beyond odor and wetness protection. I recommend Dove Advanced Care, because if offers 48 hours of odor and wetness protection, plus added skincare benefits with its NutriumMoisture formula for softer, smoother underarms.
What’s an area of the body that’s often neglected when it comes to skin care?
When people think about skincare, they typically first think about their face. It’s important to remember to take care of your entire body, including your neck, chest, hands, feet and underarms! It is not unusual for women in their 40s to come to my clinic complaining about the skin on their neck, chest and hands.
What’s the best way to help alleviate underarm issues like dry skin and irritation?
If you’re experiencing underarm issues you are not alone. Nearly 2 in 3 women report having some kind of underarm issue, whether it be dry skin, red marks, uneven skin tone or irritation. It’s important to use a deodorant that contains a moisturizing formula that can soothe your skin and help alleviate these problems. Be gentle to this skin when shaving or waxing. If you feel shaving or waxing is contributing to irritation, consider a more permanent solution.
How do antiperspirants work?
The way antiperspirants generally work is that the active ingredient temporarily blocks the release of sweat from the sweat ducts. The salts dissolve into the skin and forms a protective layer over the mouth of the sweat ducts, which reduces perspiration in the underarm.
Should we put deodorant on in the morning or at night?
You can put your antiperspirant on at any time of the day that is most convenient for you. If you have sensitive skin after shaving, it’s ideal to shave in the evening, and apply antiperspirant in the morning after your skin has had a chance to recover overnight. You can also look into a fragrance-free antiperspirant for sensitive skin that has moisturizers, which can be gentler on recently shaved skin.
What causes underarm dark marks and uneven skin tone?
Darkened skin under the arms are often caused by friction and occasionally by inflammation. Friction from underarm skin rubbing on itself or on clothes and friction from aggressive shaving are often culprits, as is overzealous waxing. Darker skin tones are particularly prone to darkened underarms, which can be genetic in nature to some extent. To remedy dark marks on your underarms, treat the area under the arms as you would other sensitive areas on your body. Be gentle when removing hair. Use a deodorant that contains calendula, an ingredient known to help restore skin to its natural tone. I recommend Dove Advanced Care in Clear Tone.
How often can we safely apply deodorant in a single day?
Most women apply deodorant once per day. However, if you shower in the middle of the day, it is perfectly fine to reapply as needed.
Is scented antiperspirant safe for sensitive skin?
You can use scented antiperspirants if you have sensitive skin, but brands also make fragrance-free variants that tend to be gentler if you cannot tolerate fragrance.
I hope you all grabbed some clarity on antiperspirants. Thank you to Dr. Barba for giving such detailed information about the care of our underarms. Dove offers a range of beautifully scented deodorants with their Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant. I have really enjoyed switching to their antiperspirants. With such a long lasting advantage there is no need to apply more throughout the day. Not only does it last a good 48 hours, it also smells amazing. By using the product I had no need to use perfume. You must try this deodorant!
COMMENT BELOW: What is one thing you learned from my talk with Dr. Barba? Have you ever used Dove’s line of antiperspirant? If so, what is your favorite fragrance/smell?
Thank you for reading!
