Second Hand Designer Handbags VS Replica handbags: Advantages and disadvantages

Fashion/ Style

For any woman, the handbag is one of the most important accessories. It can transform a regular outfit into an extraordinary one and it can make you look apart in a special day. However, buying a designer handbag is pretty pricey and very often, almost impossible. When you must wait for years to buy a designer bag you have only two options left: to get a second hand one from stores like fashion phile or to get a replica handbag. You don’t know what is the best choice? Here are some advantages and disadvantages to consider:

The price. Let’s be honest: even if it is second hand, a designer bag can cost as much as a car, especially if it is in excellent condition or it belongs to a recent collection. This means that you won’t be able to get more than a few of them every year. On the other hand, buying a quality replica is affordable and you don’t have to save money to do it.

The availability. You already know how difficult it is to buy a new designer handbag; in some cases, you have to be on the waiting list before you have the chance to get it. Although second hand bags are easier to find, you still have to spend time searching for the model that you want. If the bag you want is limited edition, chances are you won’t find it very soon.

At the same time, finding a replica is as easy as it can be. There are dozens of websites online that sell knockoffs.

The quality of the material. There are companies who produce high-quality replicas, but this does not mean that they get close to the quality of an original one. The materials are not as good; they don’t pay attention to every detail like big brands do and for sure the hardware will change its appearance with time. Besides, since they produce thousands of them every year, the color of the bags might not be the same as the original.

When it comes to a designer handbag, you get what you pay for: high quality materials that will last for years and years, beautiful colors and carefully analyzed details. Most of the companies even offer a few years guarantee for their bags, because they know that their products are top notch quality. However, some second-hand bags are not in a great condition as their previous owner did not take care of them; are you ready to pay a high price for something that already has flaws?

The looks. No matter how good a replica is, a good eye can always tell if the bag you are wearing is original or not. For some women, having a fake bag is a problem as they need to display a professional and classy appearance all the time.

In the opposite pole, when you show up with an authentic designer handbag everyone will know that you value your clothing and accessories and you are ready to pay more for better quality.

Conclusion. It is up to you to decide if you will go on a hunt for a good second hand bag or if you will order a replica bag online. Either way, make sure you wear your outfit with confidence and style; no amount of money can buy these accessories.

This is so cool, I never imagined that replica handbags could be as great as the original. I am worried though about the durability if it can at least last for a while. I think I should really try one.

I’ve never seen a good post like this talking about replica or second hand designer bags! I personally don’t like the idea of buying a replica, (to each their own) . I love Prada and Michael Kors bags and have designer bags from before I went vegan (they last forever!) but since going vegan and I refuse to buy leather due to ethical reasons but I have been considering purchasing second hand designer bags to still get the bags I love and the good quality without contributing to the business of making leather bags (and they’re cheaper haha)!

    Great Post!!
No matter how well a replica is made, it can never be like the real deal….I like that!

My other half once spent a fortune on a second hand Chloe bag that turned out to be a fake. I knew straight away but didn’t like to say anything. But within a week the leather started disintegrating so I had to come clean. He was absolutely gutted. These days we only buy from reputable stores!!

You have such a great collections. I have designer bags too and think they last for ages.

I do have designer bag, and its outlasted all my other non-brand handbags. So I would go for a pre-loved designer bag just because the quality would be good xx

I own one ‘designer’ hand bag & that’s Ted Baker, I love it. I’m not sure I’d buy a replica though! xo

My mummy has a black Chanel classic flap bag and it was the best purchase she ever made. She bought it in store in Dubai and its an investment (its her only designer bag) she’s a big fan of shoes more x

I would love a real designer handbag If I had the money I’d probably spend more than I do

I did have a few when I was a teenager but now I would save for the real thing the quality is so good that they last me 6 years or more with everyday/ frequent use which I think is quite good. K x

I used to have a lot of replicas when I was younger (I went to China a lot haha), but now I’d much rather buy a cheaper handbag from somewhere I can actually afford rather than pretend to have a designer bag.

I found this post really interesting as I don’t tend to buy designer handbags and had not really though about buying second hand although that sounds great.

As much as I love handbags, I don’t usually buy designer or replica. I prefer to spend the money on a holiday! 🙂

I’m not a fan of replica bags. If I find a good pre-loved bag, I would buy it and clean it super good.
But in general I prefer small independent designers and more affordable bags, rather than coveting after big labels.

I have to say I would really rather have a second hand designer bag as opposed to a replica. Although I guess it comes down to what designers you want to own and how much you are willing to spend to own that designer bag x

  • Reply joanna December 19, 2016 at 7:36 am

I love handbags and if I could afford to I’d definitely go for a designer second hand bag over a replica.

  • Reply Jen December 19, 2016 at 5:59 am

If it were up to me, I’d rather stay with designer, second hand or not. It just wouldn’t feel right being a replica. I would feel cheated.

  • Reply Miracle Max December 19, 2016 at 2:31 am

I’m lucky enough to own a number of designer bags. I could definitely buy a pre-loved bag if it’s in good condition but I just couldn’t bring myself to buy a replica. Jo x

I tend to lust after the lower-priced designer bags (Tory Burch, Kate Spade), and seek out sales, when they come down to quite reasonable prices (between £150 and £300, depending on the style). Other than that I keep an eye out for sample sales and on ebay for second hand bags – replicas aren’t for me.

  • Reply Rhian Westbury December 19, 2016 at 1:39 am

I don’t go for super expensive handbags, my preference is fossil which are generally £150-300 so for these I generally just buy full price, but normally I try to do it when I’m in the States or something and it’s a bit cheaper x

I’m a huge handbag lover but no matter how much I love a bag, I just can’t bring myself to buy a replica one – it’s second hand all the way for me x

  • Reply paula December 18, 2016 at 2:18 pm

Very good facts, I wish I could have a designer bag, but to be honest I can’t afford even a second hand one, and I’m the kind of person that refuse to have a fake one…

  • Reply Rachel December 18, 2016 at 11:06 am

I agree with your points but the fake designer bag have improved so much over the past few years that you do sometimes have to look twice x

  • Reply Anosa December 18, 2016 at 10:16 am

I think sometimes it’s best to go with replica than second hand as you said some second hand are still just as expensive

  • Reply Elizabeth December 17, 2016 at 11:31 pm

These are some really nice bags. I’m not fussed if they’re genuine or replica, they just need to have room for all my stuff – coffee flasks, OS maps, a packed lunch, etc. 😉

  • Reply Jimmy and Tina December 17, 2016 at 1:32 pm

Great article, I think I would rather have the second hand bag. I know there are some really good knock off’s but I would be so embarrassed to be called out for carrying a fake.

  • Reply hannah December 17, 2016 at 7:19 am

I used to have a few fake bags and they fell apart in a few months. Now I would save up and buy a real one, rather than waste my money on a fake x

  • Reply StressedMum December 17, 2016 at 1:28 am

As I have an obsession with handbags I loved this post, I have only ever had replica bags but I do have a dream one day to own my own designer handbag or bags 🙂

  • Reply Kirstie Melville December 16, 2016 at 3:59 pm

This was a really interesting post. I’ve never bought a designer bag and tend to just go for high street options as I’ve never really found a designer bag that I love enough to spend that amount of money on. I do really like the YSL bags though, and would consider buying a pre-loved one x
